Exploring locally

El Romo

Exploring nearby

Set in the small village of El Romo, with only a few other properties nearby, you'll find this is a very peaceful and naturally beautiful part of Andalucía. Around us there are many opportunities for exploring by foot, or mountain bike, the paths and trails, and within a short drive you can reach the natural parks of Montes de Malaga, El Torcal and the Sierra's Tejeda, Almijara & Alhama, which offer fantastic walking, scrambling and mountain biking. We have maps for all of the surrounding area, can always offer advice on local tracks and trails, or indeed you can join us for one of our ´Single day adventures´.

The villages of Comares and Colmenar are close by and reached by car within 20 minutes. Here you'll find bars and restaurants, banks, supermarkets, butchers, hardware store and the local medical centre.

There are also many pretty small villages that sit on the slopes of the mountains, where a cold drink and a few plates of tapas can be enjoyed in the warm summer sun.

And not to forget that no stay with us is complete until you visit Bar El Niño, a small family run tapas bar, just a few minutes’ walk from us.

You'll find that getting around is easier with your own transport, although we do offer day excursions, and of course can collect/return you to Malaga airport.

Colmenar

Colmenar

Colmenar (15 minutes, 10 kilometres)

Colmenar is the nearest large town to us, a town that still has an original feel to it and provides most of the services you´d expect to see from a much bigger town. The name Colmenar is derived from the Spanish word ´colmena´, which means beehive, and reflects the importance the local honey industry has had in this area. There is also a museum dedicated to this in Colmenar.

The town dates back to 1777, when it became in Independent Township, where you´ll find that the centre of the town has a very rustic Spanish feel. The town is too young to of been influenced by the Moorish era (which is evident in many of the villages in Axarquia), but it still has the narrow and steep winding streets that you see in many of the villages here.

Colmenar is not a tourist destination in itself, as it still very much a working town, but you´ll find yourself mixing with the many British, Germans and Dutch who live here, along with the Spanish themselves. We find Colmenar a very friendly and welcoming town, and enjoy the food and drink served there, along as using it for most of our day to day chores.

Eating and Drinking

For what appears a small town, there is certainly a good choice of places to relax, grab a drink and have something to eat. The main street is the Calle Camino de Malaga, and here you´ll find several small bars which serve hot and cold drinks, along with a selection of meals from the menu, and Tapas. Tapas is one of the traditional foods of Spain, and is usually a small dish of meat, seafood or vegetables, and is great to accompany your drink.

There are several bars that serve Tapas but we can recommend Bar Ceporro (open from early, but Tapa is usually not served until after midday) which is opposite the statue in the centre of the town.

Another good bar is Los Pepes, just opposite Bar Ceporro, and a relatively new restaurant in Colmenar is the bar La Olivo, just farther along from Bar Ceporro, and has a very varied and tasty menu, offering larger meals for when you want to spend an evening in the town.

Bar Pilar, on the A7204, has a lively atmosphere at night and also provides great food, and food is possible in the hotel Balcon de los Montes, on the MA 435.

Shopping

A wide range of shops are available, and it should be possible to find most of the items you´ll need during your stay. There are several supermarkets in Colmenar; the Eroski City (opposite the Hotel Balcon de los Montes) is certainly the biggest, but the smaller Coviran also has a wide selection of food. For fresh meat and poultry then the butcher just off of the centre is worth a visit.

If you need extra money for your stay the centre of Colmenar has two banks, both with 24 hour ATMs. There is the Cajamar and Unicaja.

Also located around the central square is a jeweller, tobacconist, stationary shop, hardware store, computer shop & pet shop.

Other services

If you have a car during your stay with us then the only petrol station, a Repsol, is located on the outskirts of the town. Located directly behind the garage, on an Industrial estate, is a garage that supplies and fits car and bike tyres, along with providing repairs. For other accessories for your car or bike, then there is Colmenauto, on the A7204.

There is also an excellent hardware store close to the Hotel Balcon de los Montes, which sells practically anything you can think of!

Emergency Services

As you would expect to find in any town, we have excellent emergency facilities. There is an accident & emergency centre just off the centre, where opposite you´ll find the Pharmacy. You´ll also find a dentist and optician located near to the centre.

If you need the assistance of the police you´ll find the Policial Local on the Calle el Cura, with the Guardia Civil on the A7000, just along from the Eroski City supermarket.
